This is Roomba, the robotic vacuum that can be scheduled to navigate autonomously through your home up to seven times per week--a feature unique to the Hammacher Schlemmer model--to remove deeply imbedded dirt and dust from carpets and floors. The unit's specially designed dual, counter-rotating agitator brushes spread carpet fibers and enable the powerful vacuum to remove pet hair and other stubborn detritus from low and high-pile carpets. Sensors redirect the unit when it encounters furniture, walls, or stairs, and its enhanced anti-tangle technology reverses the rotation of the brushes when it senses rug fringe. Two Virtual Walls project infrared beams that the unit won't cross, blocking it from doorways or forbidden areas.  Great helper but you will still need to vacuum too September 1, 2010

Cleaning Power: A great helper but be prepared to clean the Roomba after every cleaning and don't expect the suction to compare with heavy duty vacuums. After running it through 3 cleannings for 4 rooms, I used the Animal Dyson vacuum to collect a full container of dirt from the carpets. The best part of the Roomba for me was the way it navigates under dressers and beds to clean areas that are normally hard to reach with a vacuum. Some adjustments will be necessary for the rooms you want cleaned on a regular schedule. I recommed a couple of small doorstops to prevent access where it frequently gets stuck. The virtual walls can also be used but I find the blinking light too much for any sleeping areas.
Maintenance: Cleaning the collection bin and filter is simple and quick. Clearing the brush area takes a little more patience as a lot accumulates on the ends requiring you to cut out tangles. The batteries are typically going to require a replacement after 6 months unless your cleaning cycles only require a small area. The self-docking feature works every time and I've only had to manually assist when it gets stuck below a dresser.
Value: Purchasing this directly from the manufacturer is cheaper and includes extra brushes and filters. The 562 model has worked for collecting pet hair with minimal problems and you can find free shipping or other coupons online.
Entertainment: OK, watching the dog panic and then slowly adjust to simply keeping an eye on the Roomba was fun. A Lab might opt to leave the Roomba alone but others may decide this thing must be stopped.

This thing is awesome. It starts up every morning and does its thing. I do not have to vacuum behind it all. The thing i wish they would make is the vacuum and scooba all in one. That would be the ultimate lazy way to clean the floors. I have to empty my dust bin about every 3 or 4 days after the initial cleaning(whoda thunk there was that much stuff under the sofas and beds). Other than that this is a Great product so far no complaints and will report back in a few months.

I love my IRobot Roomba. I got the Pet Series 562. We have a multiple large dog household, plus we live on a farm so there is more than your average share of dust and dirt soming in the door. It was nigh on embarrassing the first time I used the "Bot" as I call it in our bedroom. I had no idea there was that much dust and dog hair in the world let alone in our bedroom.
Having the "Bot" is like having a cleaning helper. It makes life soooo much easier. The only draw back that I have found is that it needs its brushes cleaned frequently. If you are not inclined toward a bit of mechanics this may not be for you. However, for me its a small trade off for really clean floors and carpets. The only other draw back is that I've had to replace the brush sets. After awhile they seem to get tired of picking up the dirt and debris. Also not a big deal for the trade off. I just order them online and keep on going. I've told all of my friends and relatives about my "Bot". I've looked at the Roomba when it first came out and was still not convinced that it was a gimmick. . . .it is most definitely not that. I love my "Bot."

I have 7 robots in all, and they do a pretty good job. As we all know, they are not cheap. They are all less then a year old. Recently, one began thumping while running. I went to the iRobot website which offered suggestions on how to diagnose this issue. One suggestion was to remove the brushes and run the robot, if the thumping continues, clink the link for customer support. I filled out the page which generates an automatic email. I provided the model, model number, and serial number. I explained that I did everything suggested, and that even with the brushes out, the thumping occured. A day later I receive an email suggesting I do everything the site told me to do, even though I stated that I had already done it! I wrote them back and asked if they even read my original email. And that I already did everything in this email. What should I do next. Then... I get another email that asks... what was the model and serial number???
Doesn't give me much confidence in this company. Not sure what I will do with the other 6 start acting up...

I have a beagle who sheds an unbelievable amount of fur. My home is 100% ceramic tile floors. One morning as I walked through the house, the sun hit the floor at just the right angle to make the floor look like I had shag carpeting! Her fur was everywhere!
I had heard about the Roomba, but was put off by the price, and wondered whether it would actually work. Having seen my new "shag carpeting", I decided to give it a try.
It has been the answer to my prayers.
It really cleans my floors. When I walk barefoot in the house my feet FEEL clean; no grit, no dog hair. Very easy to empty out the dustbin. It does all the things they advertise. It is programmed to run every morning at 8:00 am. It automatically finds its way back home when finished. I have not had to bring out the upright vacuum cleaner. I set it up to run in each room in the house: under beds, under dressers, bathrooms, kitchen. I use the two Virtual Walls to contain it in each room, so each one gets a thorough vacuuming. Absolutely worth the money.
